How do people react when you say that you are a breaker or jump roper?

All interviewees explained that people have a surprised or confused reaction when they say they jump rope or break. For jumpers, people don't understand that jump rope is an activity that expands beyond the playground and can be used as a profession. They respond with “oh there’s a sport for that?” or “oh, you mean like double dutch?” (Yana, Nick). Breakers expressed that people are unaware that breaking is still an active activity. They respond with “Oh! I saw that in the ‘80s, that’s the thing where you spin, right” or “they still do that?” (Eric, Rokafella). Amongst both jumpers and breakers, people don't understand what their sports are until they explain it in depth. After that, people usually develop a level of respect for their activity.
